Respect for the Gentle Giants of the ocean.

Respect for the Gentle Giants of the ocean.

The project is to reduce scientific whaling in the Southern Oceans. The challenge is to understand the Japanese position and work within those parameters to influence their decision to reduce and ultimately stop whaling.

This year the Japanese whaling fleet intends to kill
• 935 Minke whales,
• 50 endangered Fin whales. The Fin whale is the second largest animal ever to live on earth.
• 50 Humpback whales. This is the first year the Humpback will be included.
This is a total of 1035 whales and is four times the number taken last year.

The project will send a message to the people of Japan that is not anti-Japanese and that will respect the Japanese culture. The current approach of protests and petitions is not working and a different way needs to be found.
The project will understand the Japanese position and influence their decision through:
• Highlighting the impact that whaling has on their international reputation.
• Highlighting what the justification of “scientific whaling” has on Japan’s credibility.
• Understanding that whales are not like other animals to be harvested like cattle or fish.

The open day will provide a profile on what is happening with the expanded cull this year. It will also acknowledge, celebrate and show respect to the gentle giants of the sea.

Comment by Paul Moss:

I understand that little blue penguins are less threatened overall, but the family that I have come to know about are in danger of losing their habitat. The appeal for the development goes to the high court in May, and humans may once again be the biggest threat,  but right now, the penguins and their offspring are in all sorts of real danger.

I see them standing around waiting for humans to leave or quieten down so that they can get home and feed their family. I suspect there are many more, as the location is the only dark spot for long distances either side.  I saw two and possibly a third last night at 11pm. While the nest I located a week ago is on the bank between the road and car park I know they nest as high as 550Metres on Kapiti so there are likely more up the hill.  They must be in great danger while standing around waiting?

What can be done to increase the safety of these precious taonga? Why hasn’t anything been done to date at this location  (that I know of anyway) we need tunnels under the car park and road, and perhaps cut the car park in half and have shrubs and ditches across the central part. What about the rats Ive seen running around there… what about cats and dogs and boy racers, who will take some action to make something happen before its too late???

Maybe some other dark areas can be created along the reserve foreshore by having the street lights replaced with approved types, and tunnels or ditches created to enable more hill access for them.

Future threat: The model of the development shows total future destruction of their nesting habitat, blocking their path from sea to hill; who is doing anything about this on behalf of the penguins?

Are we prepared as a society to sacrifice this colony for the sake of the greater good? I think that is faulty logic..  I believe every single creature counts while it is alive it has a right to be safe from humans and human created dangers.

Maybe you can help increase awareness of their plight? Thanks , Paul Moss

Astronomy and Marine with Music and Photography at
Te Rae Kai Hau Point, Wellington, Thursday 25th October 2007. 6pm onwards. The almost full moon rises ahead of the sunset, giving an extraordinary window of opportunity to take beautiful landscape images on a very special piece of open space, recently saved from development.

Sunset at 19:57 (3min to 8pm) and moonrise at 18:45 (15min to 7pm). Bring torches and very warm clothing, look in the rock pools, the night life is massive around this coastline, pretty, diverse, intricate, awesome!

previous events:===================

Three Scapes Three – Papatuanuku

‘Three Scapes Three’ is a public outdoor event at
Te Rae Kai Hau Point on Tuesday August 28th at 5 pm onwards.

It features the exquisite south coast sunset, the sky, telescopes and a barbeque, (maybe) a full moon rising and a TOTAL ECLIPSE of the moon maybe not seen in New Zealand for another 40 years! The moon will rise ahead of sunset, slipping back into the earths shadow after sunset , turning redder and darkening for hours, an awesome spectacle not to be missed!
This full moon is a ‘Sturgeon Moon’ paying homage to the sea, Tangaroa, which surrounds three sides of the point. The purpose is to share the wonder of the sky, and raise awareness for reducing light pollution. This is the third in the series of three, Atea, Tangaroa. Papatuanuku, the land on which we stand, is the foundation of all human activity and must be thought about carefully in relation to the sky and the sea.
Presented by Southern Kaitiaki for You, and a range of other interested individuals and groups.

More info, maps, and wet weather plans will be posted on www.sky.org.nz .
