The International Year of Astronomy

- what is it?
The International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) will be a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, highlighted by the 400th anniversary of the first use of an astronomical telescope by Galileo Galilei. The aim of the Year is to stimulate worldwide interest, especially among young people, in astronomy and science under the central theme "The Universe, Yours to Discover".

About ...

The 'Horowhenua Chronicle' just put our image on the front page of the newspaper, about 30% of the page, and an article about us for about 50% of the page. circulation 2661 readership 6000.[1]

It's quite amusing to read about myself in this way, and when i put 'Levin Stargazers' into google i see my name pop up on dozens of sites in relation to the two IYA awards we received from the 100 Hours of Astronomy task group. Firstly, the Levin Stargazers WON the 'Community Outreach' award and secondly I received a 'Highly Commended' for the 'Most Outstanding individual'. The awards are to be acknowledged in Rio De Janeiro at the next IYA2009 conference, where my Levin Stargazers image takes pride of place in the centre of an A1 poster about NZ astronomy. (July 31st 2009.)

Dominion Post called me 'Renaissance Man' (August 2007) and D-Scene called us 'Star Men', (October 2008) Asia Downunder called me an 'astronomer and videographer' and my friends and I 'these three artists' (April 2009).

I'm a DOP (Director of Photography) My work is showing on TV3 NIGHTLINE as part of the footage for the New Zealand paint party Illuminate. the footage is from myself and my crew of camera operators. TV3 created a montage of Buzz Aldrin, Snoop Dog and a clip from my footage, and that was their background to enter/exit the story. (The clip aired on the 40th anniversary of the first moonwalk). ref [2]

I'm an artist STARS the performance installation by Warwick Blair played at Galatos for 24 hours featuring the music of Warwick Blair, the singing of Arpita Chanda, and the six screens of pure sky films by Paul Moss. ref: [3] The largest television network in New Zealand broadcast a documentary 'The Sound of the Skies' about my work with two other artists, Warwick Blair and Arpita Chanda, featuring my visuals. It went to air at 10:30am Sunday, 14th June 2009. The documentary was Episode 16 made by Asia Vision Ltd for Asia Downunder, and funded by New Zealand On Air. The programme repeats on many channels across New Zealand, and is also available for viewing and download at http://tvnz.co.nz/asia-downunder and www.youtube.com.[4] quote: "We check out Stars, a 24hr performance installation, music composed by Warwick Blair with live vocals by award winning singer Arpita Chanda. For more images by Paul Moss and others check out: www.sky.org.nz "

I'm a visual artist, a film-maker; The New Zealand Film Archive reported my STARS installation there, [5] the Wellington City Library reported my Three 'Scapes installation there [6]. and the Wellington City Council reported it here. [7] I also got reported for STARS at Dunedin Public Art Gallery in Dunedin City Council reports and D-Scene newspaper. We also got reported for our STARS preview at Gus FIsher Gallery in Auckland. . The Dunedin Art Gallery reported our STARS event here [8], and Gus Fisher Gallery event here [9]. NZ Music Magazine [10], Amplifier.co.nz [11]

I'm a photographer, I recently got published in 700,000 Discover Magazines "April 2009, On page 18 in our "Hot Science" section." [12], 90,000 Sky and Telescope magazines, [13] I've also been published in the 2008 calender of the Wellington South Coast for Save The Point and the 2009 astronomical almanac for the Phoenix Astronomical Society, Positive Living magazine, and Parihaka International Peace Festival Programme. The IAU / UNESCO conference in Rio De Janero has an A1 poster featuring a wide range of New Zealand astronomers and astronomy related activity images. I managed to get two of my images on that poster, in the central area, and quite prominent. The poster is being printed and sent to every school in New Zealand.

I'm an astronomer, I recently mobilised over 1300 people to lookthrough a telescope in one day, a New Zealand record, as part of a world record, reported in multiple sources. [14] and here [15]. I got a 'highly commended' ranking in the 100HA awards as 'Outstanding Individual within a registered 100 Hours of Astronomy event'. ref [16]

I'm an illustrator I illustrated Astronomy Aotearoa book which one the NZ BPA best design award, 2008. [17] award report here [18]

The media said "The book teaches the history of Western Science. There is emphasis on leading figures such as Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Scientists appear as people along with an introduction to their theories. In all cases the book seeks to make science accessible to students of all abilities. The book features the work of many New Zealand photographers including Wellingtonian Paul Moss. Mr Moss said many amateur photographers watch the sky and take unique photographs. “It is wonderful to see their work in print”. ref [19]

Radio New Zealand called me up for an interview, and they played a few seconds of that on the National News, across the country, at 12:00 on Friday ahead of the Galilean Nights weekend. Its called the Midday Report, and to preserve that I created a video using pics and footage of the weekend, along with my historical sky images, and the Moon and Jupiter images from Maurice Collins, an astro-photographer who took those shots on the actual night that we were out sharing with the public. There is also an astro-photograph of a globular cluster by Steve Chadwick, and all the other images are taken by me. Thanks to Mike and David and Shirley for amazing support, we got over 500 views in the 4 hours we were on th estreet. Thanks to the Sahara Cafe for support and friendship.
